About Universiti Sains Malaysia
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was established in 1969 as the second university in Malaysia, first under the name Universiti Pulau Pinang. In 1971 it moved from temporary premises at the Malayan Teachers' Training College in Bukit Gelugor to its present 416.6-hectare site at Minden, about 9.7 km from George Town on Penang Island. MOHE recognised USM as a Research Intensive University in 2007, and in 2008 it became the first university selected for the government's Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX).
The main campus in Penang holds 17 academic schools. The Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal, Penang, holds 6 engineering schools, and the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, holds the Schools of Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences and Health Sciences. USM uses a school system rather than the traditional faculty system, so students are exposed to subjects from other schools.
International students can apply for bachelor's degrees in the sciences, engineering, medicine and health, management, social sciences, humanities and the arts. Some programmes are taught in Malay, so check the medium of instruction of your programme. Applications are made online, and USM states that international candidates must obtain their student visa through EMGS before travelling to Malaysia.
